Objective:

The goal of this project is to identify and characterize factors that adversely affect terrestrial agricultural, wild and associated habitats. This project seeks to identify biomarkers of exposure and early warning signs of adverse effects to ecosystems and investigates interactions among environmental stressors.

Approach:

The Terrestrial-Agriculture Project focuses on orchards, cultivated and uncultivated fields, streams and uncultivated areas such as hedgerows, mainly in Yolo County. Stresses in this ecosystem include pesticides and herbicides, other chemicals such as metals and fertilizers, water, temperature, agricultural practices, and quality of habitat. Emphasis is on two or three putative stressors, including pesticides, likely to be operative at several trophic levels.

The results from the several trophic levels of inquiry will be incorporated into a vertically-integrated model of the effects of stressors using:

    a. GIS plots of land use, physical parameters, and pesticide applications,
    b. fate and transport data on selected chemicals,
    c. stress and toxicity data obtained from laboratory and field studies and
    d. demographic data.

From this research, the investigators will derive "stress" models of the responses of selected organisms and trophic levels. These "models" (whether conceptual or mathematical) will be driven by the data. The goals of such constructs are to:

    a. clarify the relationships between the organisms, habitats and parameters studied,
    b. predict the effects of stressors, and
    c. ultimately, establish the rate-limiting factors affecting the health of wildlife and agricultural soil in the study area.

Expected Results:

Working in both the laboratory and the field, the objectives and expected results of the Terrestrial-Agriculture Project are:

    1. developing biomarkers of exposure to pesticides and other stressors,
    2. preparing to test the biomarkers on selected ecosystems,
    3. examining the health of agroecosystems,
    4. participating in discussions on developing and testing a terrestrial ecological risk assessment model.
