Description:
Arsenic is presently one of the most widespread wastewater treatment problems. Arsenic occurs in the Earth's crust at an average level of 2-5 ppm. The combustion of fossil fuels, particularly coal, introduces large quantities of arsenic into the environment, much of which reaches natural waters. Acute arsenic poisoning can result from the ingestion of as little as 100 mg of the element, while chronic poisoning occurs with the ingestion of a small amount of arsenic over a long period of time. Processes developed for arsenic removal from drinking water (anion exchange and activated alumina) are too expensive for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. In particular, these processes are appropriate for small volumes of water with low levels of dissolved and suspended solids. These processes are only feasible when competing anions such as sulfates or carbonates are absent. Therefore, TDA Research proposes to develop a new specialty extractant to remove arsenic from industrial wastewater streams, in particular from waste streams emanating from coal-fired power plants and acid mine drainage. In Phase I, they will synthesize novel metal-chelating ligands and conduct experiments to demonstrate their ability to selectively extract arsenic over competing anions like sulfates.Supplemental Keywords:
