2024 Progress Report: Towards sustainable water resource management in Missouri through technology advancement, stakeholder engagement, and workforce development
EPA Grant Number: EM840651Title: Towards sustainable water resource management in Missouri through technology advancement, stakeholder engagement, and workforce development
Investigators: Deng, Baolin , Market, Patrick
Institution: University of Missouri - Columbia
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2026
Project Period Covered by this Report: October 1, 2023 through September 30,2024
Project Amount: $5,000,000
RFA: Congressionally Directed Spending (2023)
Research Category: Watersheds , Endocrine Disruptors , Water
Objective:
This project aims to integrate physical science, social science, and engineering research to advance sustainable water resource management. Three objectives are: (1) to enhance Missouri Water Center's human and laboratory infrastructure, (2) to conduct high-priority research that will fill the knowledge and technology gaps, and (3) to implement a seed-grant program that will simulate multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary collaborations to grow the competitive research portfolio of Missouri Water Center.
Progress Summary:
To enhance the research infrastructure of Missouri Water Center (MWC), we have conducted an open search and successfully filled two new staff positions – one as Senior Program Coordinator and the other as Research Scientist or Research Assistant Professor. Several laboratory and field instruments have been purchased for water analysis and monitoring. Three targeted research projects are under way with hiring graduate students, site selection and visits, acquisition of supplies, and stakeholder interviews and data analysis. The first round of seed-grant funding has been awarded to support eight projects, among them two are completed. Proposals for round two of the seed grant funding have been reviewed; and awards will be made January 2025 pending on final approval by the EPA.
Future Activities:
Future activities include the purchase of remaining items of equipment budgeted for in the grant, continued work on high-priority research and round-one seed projects, and the award of round two seed-grant funding to MWC faculty per the recommendations of a review panel.
