Research Category: Human Health , Children's Health
Objective:
The objective of this research work is to conduct risk assessment estimates for daily soil and dust ingestion for children aged 6 months to 6 years by expansion of an existing validated model to simulate soil (based on previous studies) and dust ingestion (based on previous data and current data being gathered in this project) across various geographic regions (i.e., North Carolina, Florida, and Arizona), built environments (i.e., urban, suburban, rural) and sociodemographic backgrounds. Data gathered in this project includes the use of videotaping and video-translation methodologies and dust collection to simulate dust ingestion rates.
Progress Summary:
The study has completed participant recruitment. Participants have completed 450 surveys to look at child behaviors in the home, demographics, house layout and house dynamics (cleaning practices). In addition, 100 field studies have been completed to collect videotaping data, and dust, hand rinse and soil samples around the homes. The team is now in the middle of dust/soil processing, video processing and model coding.
Future Activities:
The project members are now processing video data (track subjects, merge files and videotranslation), processing dust samples for mass analysis, conducting survey analysis, and recoding and refining model algorithms (including developing databases and distributions from existing data).
The project just received renewed IRB approval for the next year (good until June of 2024).
