Research Category: Human Health , Children's Health
Objective:
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and the incidence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the US has increased by 55% since 1975, disproportionately affecting Latino children. Environmental exposures are important contributing causes of childhood ALL, alone or in combination with genetic and epigenetic factors. Most cases of childhood ALL will be cured, but survivors are at increased risk of debilitating medical and psychosocial complications, thus, elucidating etiologic pathways, with an aim toward prevention, remains an important goal.
To reach its goals, the Center for Integrative Research on Childhood Leukemia and the Environment (CIRCLE) is composed of three Cores and three Research Projects. Project 1 (In Utero Chemical Exposures, Immune Status, and Childhood Leukemia), Project 2 (Identifying In Utero Exposures that Are Risk Factors for Childhood Leukemia), Project 3 (Prenatal Exposures, Constitutive Genetics, DNA Methylation and Childhood Leukemia), the Community Outreach and Translation Core, the Administrative Core, and the Mouse Model Service Core. The specific aims for each can be found on the individual project pages.
Progress Summary:
Please refer to the detailed descriptions provided in each report for Center projects for a description of the progress made toward meeting the overall goals of the Center.
Future Activities:
Please refer to the detailed descriptions provided in each report for Center projects for a description of the activities planned in order to meet the overall goals of the Center.
