Current Investigators: Leon, Arturo
Institution: Oregon State University
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: June 1, 2012 through May 31, 2017
Project Period Covered by this Report: June 1, 2015 through May 31,2016
Project Amount: $265,528
RFA: Extreme Event Impacts on Air Quality and Water Quality with a Changing Global Climate (2011) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Earth Sciences - Environmental Science , Aquatic Ecosystems , Air Quality and Air Toxics , Water Quality , Water , Air , Climate Change

Objective:

  1. To develop a mathematical formulation for geysers in vertical shafts.
  2. To implement the mathematical formulation for geysers into a state-of-the-art open source (free and open access) transient flow model that can be used in complex combined sewer systems (CSSs).
  3. To validate the mathematical geyser framework under highly dynamic flow conditions.

Progress Summary:

As of June 1, 2016, the following progress has been achieved:

  1. The mathematical formulation for geysers has been completed and is being validated using lab experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
  2. A 3D CFD two-phase flow model has been validated.
  3. Extensive laboratory experiments are being conducted.
  4. Retrofitting solutions for minimizing the intensity of geysers are being tested in the lab.

Future Activities:

  1. The geyser mathematical formulation will be further developed, validated, and implemented into the state-of-the-art transient analysis program Illinois Transient Model (ITM).
  2. More extensive laboratory geyser experiments with and without retrofitting will be conducted.
