Objective:
- To develop a mathematical formulation for geysers in vertical shafts.
- To implement the mathematical formulation for geysers into a state-of-the-art open source (free and open access) transient flow model that can be used in complex combined sewer systems (CSSs).
- To validate the mathematical geyser framework under highly dynamic flow conditions.
Progress Summary:
As of June 1, 2016, the following progress has been achieved:
- The mathematical formulation for geysers has been completed and is being validated using lab experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
- A 3D CFD two-phase flow model has been validated.
- Extensive laboratory experiments are being conducted.
- Retrofitting solutions for minimizing the intensity of geysers are being tested in the lab.
Future Activities:
- The geyser mathematical formulation will be further developed, validated, and implemented into the state-of-the-art transient analysis program Illinois Transient Model (ITM).
- More extensive laboratory geyser experiments with and without retrofitting will be conducted.
