Objective:
This project is taking advantage of a rich and unique existing time-series to evaluate novel questions regarding the relationship between air pollution and hospital admissions in Denver, Colorado. We are leveraging 5 years of data from the Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study, including daily fine particulate matter mass (PM2.5; particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter), species, and source factors, to examine the association of air pollution with novel health outcomes (Objective 1). Additionally, we will explore several questions aimed at providing insight regarding susceptible populations (Objective 2) as well as regarding other potential factors leading to heterogeneity of health effect estimates in relation to ambient air pollution (Objectives 3 and 4).
Progress Summary:
This summary represents progress during the second year of the research award (April 1, 2012 – March 31, 2013). Colorado State University IRB approval was renewed on August 10, 2012. We have continued to evaluate the air quality data used for this project, particularly the spatial patterns observed in the PM2.5 mass and species data in Denver. We have also examined the uncertainty of the fine PM data. Additionally, we have conducted an evaluation of the robustness of the source apportionment data to alternative ways of incorporating temperature.
Due to difficulty in finding qualified applicants, we obtained approval to hire a consultant in lieu of the biostatistics postdoctoral fellow position that was included in the budget. Dr. Zev Ross was hired in December 2012. We applied for a 1-year no-cost extension in January 2013; the extension was awarded in February 2013 (extension through March 2014). In March 2013, we participated in the advanced monitoring system and met with the EPA program officer to discuss the progress of the study. We obtained approval from EPA to add emergency department visits to the analysis. We are now in discussion with hospitals to determine the feasibility of adding data. We have finished Objective 1 of the project (with hospital admission data), and we have preliminary results for Objective 2. We also started planning for Objectives 3 and 4.
Future Activities:
The IRB approval for the project will be renewed in August 2013. We will continue to work on Objectives 2-4 of the project, which will be finished by October 2013. We will continue to work on obtaining emergency department visit data for the study period. Manuscripts will be developed and submitted.
