RFA: Sources and Atmospheric Formation of Organic Particulate Matter (2007) RFA Text | Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Particulate Matter , Air
Objective:
The goal of this project is to measure secondary organic aerosol formation in the laboratory and develop models to represent this process in atmospheric models.Progress Summary:
Notable results of this past year include:
-
Elucidation of the high-NOx pathway to isoprene SOA formation
-
Evaluation of the extent of oxidation of chamber SOA in a variety of systems
-
Measurements of SOA products from naphthalene
-
Global modeling of SOA, revealing the roles of SVOC, IVOC, and NOx, NO3
-
Development of a detailed thermodynamic model of inorganic/organic/water mixtures for modeling SOA phase behavior and gas-particle partitioning.
Each of these studies has furthered our understanding of the potential of important classes of compounds to serve as sources of atmospheric SOA and thereby has fit the goals of the project.
Future Activities:
A number of studies are ongoing. These include:
-
Continued study of the role of glyoxal as an SOA precursor, especially to explain conflicting data in the literature.
-
Investigation of SOA formation from methoxyphenol compounds (major emissions from biomass burning).
-
Development of a chamber protocol for SOA aging experiments.
