2008 Progress Report: Formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol

EPA Grant Number: R833749
Title: Formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol
Investigators: Seinfeld, John
Institution: California Institute of Technology
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2010 (Extended to September 30, 2011)
Project Period Covered by this Report: October 1, 2007 through September 30,2008
Project Amount: $600,000
RFA: Sources and Atmospheric Formation of Organic Particulate Matter (2007) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Particulate Matter , Air Quality and Air Toxics , Air

Objective:

The goal of this project is to measure secondary organic aerosol formation in the laboratory and develop models to represent this process in atmospheric models.

Progress Summary:

Work proceeded well during this year. Notable results include:

  1. Publication of a comprehensive review of the current state of understanding of the chemistry of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation.
  2. Development and evaluation using chamber data of a comprehensive chemical mechanism for photooxidation of isoprene.
  3. Assessment of the potential for SOA formation from the biogenic hydrocarbon, 2-Methyl-3-Butene-2-ol (MBO).
  4. Study of the uptake of glyoxal on ammonium sulfate aerosol, as a potential route for SOA formation.
  5. Study of SOA formation from the important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthalene and alkylnaphthalenes, and estimation of implications for SOA formation from intermediate volatility organic compounds.

Each of these studies has furthered our understanding of the potential of important classes of compounds to serve as sources of atmospheric SOA and thereby has fit the goals of the project.

Future Activities:

A number of studies are planned for this year. These include:

  1. Study of the role of aerosol-phase water (as governed by relative humidity) and aerosol-phase acidity in SOA formation.
  2. Study of the role of epoxides as intermediates in SOA formation of important SOA precursors. This is aimed to clarify mechanisms of SOA formation.
  3. Publication of chemical speciation of SOA and routes of formation from naphthalene and the alkylnaphthalenes.
  4. Continued investigation of new classes of SOA precursors.
