Atmospheric Fate and Dry Deposition of Urban Soot to Great Waters Using a Novel, State-of-the-Art Isotopic Particulate Tracer

EPA Grant Number: R825247
Title: Atmospheric Fate and Dry Deposition of Urban Soot to Great Waters Using a Novel, State-of-the-Art Isotopic Particulate Tracer
Investigators:
Institution: University of Maryland - College Park
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: December 6, 1996 through December 5, 1999 (Extended to December 5, 2000)
Project Amount: $454,976
RFA: Air Quality (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Air

Description:

In this project, the University of Maryland will apply enriched rare-earth isotopic tracers and improved sampling techniques to elucidate the atmospheric behavior of urban soot and to determine the source of soot depositing onto the Chesapeake Bay. Novel and state-of-the-art techniques will be used to accurately measure the dry particle deposition flux of tagged soot aerosol to surface waters of the Chesapeake Bay and examine its time-scale for atmospheric ageing over distances of 80 km. Measurements of the fate of carbon soot aerosol should reveal the sources of particles responsible for atmospheric deposition of PAH into the Chesapeake Bay. The results of deposition studies to be attempted should provide sorely-needed yet nonexistent values of the deposition velocities for urban soot, an important, aerosol constituent.
