Objective:
The goal of this project was to enhance the expertise and capabilities of the principal investigator and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in the area of biofiltration of toxic industrial VOCs through cooperative research with Dr. Basil Baltzis of the Northeast Hazardous Substance Research Center (NHSRC). We expected, also, to generate a significant body of data that would contribute to the understanding and implementation of biofiltration as a control technology for biodegradation of toluene and ethylbenzene.
Approach:
A microbial culture capable of biodegrading toluene and ethylbenzene was developed, and the kinetics of the biodegradation of the individual compounds were studied in shake flasks. The data obtained were subjected to mathematical analysis. Kinetic models were developed and the best-estimates of the constants obtained. Biofiltration experiments were carried out in glass columns under experimental conditions similar to those investigated by Dr. Baltzis group, using different column packings and microbial cultures. The results of the packed-column experiments were modeled successfully with computer codes developed at NHSRC.
Expected Results:
Biofiltration is a relatively new technology for VOCs emissions control. It is believed to be the most economical way to treat low level-up to several thousand ppm-readily biodegradable VOCs in gas streams. It is a very complex process. Among questions that need further investigation before biofiltration is developed into an optimized technology are the kinetics of biodegradation of specific VOCs, the effect of different packing materials and microbial cultures, and realistic modeling of the process.
