Objective:
The object for this research project is for the investigator to achieve a method of remediation for lead contaminated soil (~10 wt Pb).
Approach:
The investigator has sample material from a superfund site in Alabama (formerly a lead smelter site) containing around 10 wt.% lead. The effort is to determine the optimum remediation method and particularly if it can be increased to make a saleable concentrate.
The investigator first tried physical methods for remediation but could not achieve sufficient separation. Also, the mineral concentration was probably too expensive to compete on a competitive basis. The tailings from a proposed processing method yield are too high in mineral or metal contamination.
Currently the investigator is working on a chemical means of removing mineral or metal contamination together with a tailings that can be disposed of while meeting EPA requirements. The sample material is from a superfund site in Alabama from an old lead smelter.
Expected Results:
The mining industry operates profitably on a very low wt.% mineral or metal. For example, Kennecott Copper Company mines an approximate 0.62 wt% Cu (12 lbs. copper/ton ore). The expected results are to enable remediation of superfund mineral sites to be more economical.
