Novel Fiber Optic Biosensor for Pesticide Residue Detection

EPA Contract Number: 68D70059
Title: Novel Fiber Optic Biosensor for Pesticide Residue Detection
Investigators: Jones, Mark
Small Business: Fiber and Sensor Technologies Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: II
Project Period: September 1, 1997 through September 1, 1999
Project Amount: $224,927
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase II (1997) Recipients Lists
Research Category: Ecological Indicators/Assessment/Restoration , SBIR - Monitoring , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

The overall objective of this Phase II project is to develop the optical fiber long-period granting (LPG) sensing element as a viable field-portable platform for the quantitative, selective identification of pesticides. During Phase I, the feasibility of such a system was clearly demonstrated. F&S and their research partners designed, built, and tested a prototype sensor utilizing recently developed LPG technology that selectively and quantitatively measured nanograms of target material in less than 5 minutes. Phase II efforts will build upon the momentum gained during the Phase I project and will produce Beta systems capable of measuring trace levels of pesticide residues in soils and groundwater. Phase II efforts will concentrate on three areas: (1) optimization of a quantitative and selective sensing element based on an LPG optical fiber sensor and an affinity coating, (2) further development of a sampling system for exposing the sensing element to target substances, and (3) prototyping of an interrogation system to measure and convert the sensor response into a user-friendly interface. To summarize, the Phase II project addresses the importance of developing highly reliable, rapid, low-cost, portable instrumentation for identifying pesticide residues in field applications.
