In-Process Recycling of Plating Wastes

EPA Contract Number: 68D50079
Title: In-Process Recycling of Plating Wastes
Investigators: Zhou, Chengdong
Small Business: Faraday Technology, Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1995 through March 1, 1996
Project Amount: $64,416
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase I (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Pollution Prevention , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

The objective of Faraday Technology's Phase I program is to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel treatment technology for in process recycling of wastewaters generated by the printed wiring board (PWB) and metal finishing industries. Specifically, their electrochemical ion-exchange (EIX) process will enable in-process recycling of both water to rinsing operations and metal salts to plating operations. Conventional ion-exchange allows in-process recycling of rinse water; however, the metal salts are not reusable in the plating process. Conventional electrochemical treatment (electrowinning) allows recovery of metal in metallic form for off-site recycling, however, the metal recovered is not compatible with in-process recycling. Additionally, the treated water from electrowinning cannot be recycled to the rinse operation. In Phase I, they will:

  1. fabricate EIX cathodes and anodes,
  2. incorporate EIX electrodes into their existing electrochemical hardware,
  3. evaluate the EIX process for treatment of lead/tin wastewater representative of solder plating operations, and
  4. conduct and economic analysis of the EIX process.
