In-Process Recycling of Plating Wastes

EPA Contract Number: 68D60049
Title: In-Process Recycling of Plating Wastes
Investigators: Zhou, Chengdong
Small Business: Faraday Technology, Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: II
Project Period: September 1, 1996 through September 1, 1998
Project Amount: $224,928
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase II (1996) Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Pollution Prevention , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

The objective of this program is to develop and commercialize a novel ELECTOCHANGETM Lead-tin Recovery System for in-process recycling of plating wastewater. The Phase I work demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of in-process recycling of Pb/Sn plating wastewater with the ELECTOCHANGETM Lead-Tin Recovery System. Specifically, Faraday demonstrated that 1) the treated water can be recycled to the rinsing operation; 2) the regenerated solution can be recycled to the plating operation; 3) no waste is generated for off-site treatment during both treatment and regeneration processes; 4) the cell performance has little degradation after regeneration; 5) compared to conventional precipitation, the ELECTOCHANGETM Lead-Tin Recovery System can save $45 MM for PWB industry by eliminating metal sludge and recycling water; and 6) the ELECTOCHANGETM Lead-Tin Recovery System is more cost effective than conventional ion-exchange and electrowinning processes. Phase II work will include: 1) process optimization; 2) design optimization; 3) economic verification; and 4) pre-commercial demonstration.
