Adjuvant Effects of Ozone in a Model of Allergen-Induced Airway Inflammation and Hyperresponsiveness

EPA Grant Number: R825702C012
Subproject: this is subproject number 012 , established and managed by the Center Director under grant R825702
(EPA does not fund or establish subprojects; EPA awards and manages the overall grant for this center).

Center: Denver Children’s Environmental Health Center - Environmental Determinants of Airway Disease in Children
Center Director: Schwartz, David A.
Title: Adjuvant Effects of Ozone in a Model of Allergen-Induced Airway Inflammation and Hyperresponsiveness
Investigators: Mason, Robert J.
Current Investigators: Gelfand, Erwin
Institution: National Jewish Medical and Research Center
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: February 16, 1998 through February 28, 2003 (Extended to February 28, 2004)
RFA: Environmental Lung Disease Center (National Jewish Medical and Research Center) (1998) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Targeted Research

Objective:

This core unit will provide the facility for exposing rodents to air pollutants both on site and off site. For short term exposure of easily monitored air pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, this will be done in the animal facility at National Jewish. For long term inhalational exposures or exposures that are difficult to quantitate, such as particulates, we will perform collaborative studies off site. This core will contain funds to encourage and support inhalation exposures. However, this year we will use funds to construct the on site component. Although we considered several off site exposures, we felt that we needed more time to define our systems and the response to instilled particulates before embarking on expensive long-term inhalation exposures.

Function

This core will develop the exposure at National Jewish for short term exposures to ozone and nitrogen dioxide. The major function for this year is for construction to build the facility at National Jewish.

Quality Assurance

The exposure facility will be designed to produce reliable monitored defined exposures. The specifics of the exposures will be defined in the individual projects. All protocols will require review by the animal care facility and review by Dr. White. The animals will be housed in special isolators after the exposure.

Personnel

Dr. White will direct this core.
