Final Report: Induction Surface Heating Membrane Distillation

EPA Grant Number: SU840149
Title: Induction Surface Heating Membrane Distillation
Investigators: Zhang, Wen , Qing, Weihua
Institution: New Jersey Institute of Technology
EPA Project Officer: Page, Angela
Phase: I
Project Period: December 1, 2020 through November 30, 2021
Project Amount: $25,000
RFA: P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet (2020) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: P3 Awards , P3 Challenge Area - Safe and Sustainable Water Resources

Objective:

In traditional MD processes, most of the heat in hot brine may not fully be used toward the promotion of water vapor transfer across the membrane due to limited water-membrane surface contact and mass transport limitations. Instead, the hot brine may lose substantial heat during brine water transfer, which either cause thermal pollution or energy waste. Significant heat loss occurs during water transfer from the heating unit to the pipes and MD module materials. By contrast, electromagnetic induction energy effectively and uniformly penetrates membrane modules and induce localized heating of the membrane-water interface. This project aims to develop a novel membrane distillation technology with goals of enhancing water vapor transfer, increasing freshwater production, reducing heat loss and saving energy. This project will further investigate (1) the heating performances of different catalyst-coated membranes at different blending ratios of ferromagnetic nanoparticles; (2) impacts of solution characteristics (e.g., brine temperature and concentration), flow rate of brine solution, induction intensity and membrane properties on the performances of MD. The project findings will enable us to gain important scientific insight into the development of cost-efficient and sustainable MD processes for desalination and water purification.
