Objective:
The objectives of this project are to learn how communities can use low-cost air quality monitors to understand their exposure to air pollution and support the ability of communities to make informed decision through effective knowledge translation. Specific aims to achieve the objectives are: (1) identify audience-specific air quality data presentation needs and preferences to support understanding and interpretation of data and (2) Evaluate the effectiveness of different knowledge translational approaches for supporting behavior modifications to minimize exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollutants. We collaborated with the Globeville/Elyria and Swansea (GES), environmental justice communities in North Denver, CO.
Progress Summary:
Our accomplishments during this project perod include:
- We have completed analyzing all data from field measurements that include:
- Spatio-temporal variability in community ambient air quality that we observed during the longitudinal monitoring study.
- Personal PM2.5 exposures within and between persons as well as comparing with ambient air PM levels in relation with activity types and microenvironments.
- Improvements in knowledge, confidence and development and implementation of action plans throughout report-back activity and personal support/coaching support.
- We have developed a manuscript that details our focus group study for identifying the needs and preferences for improving environmental health literacy.
- We have contributed to EPA’s story map on citizen science
Future Activities:
We will finalize the blueprint for community air quality monitoring that describes field study preparation process, data collection and presenting processes, and lesson learned from our project to help communities design their community air quality monitoring studies. We will also finalize manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal publication. In lieu of Town Hall meeting that was canceled because of COVID-19 infection risk, we will produce YouTube video clip to share our study results with the study community and a broader audience.
