Research Category: Chemical Safety for Sustainability

Objective:

This project will develop a portable, field-deployable device to perform automated, rapid, sensitive, and in situ analysis of hundreds of volatile and semi‐volatile organic compounds for indoor air exposure assessment.

Progress Summary:

  1. We have fabricated and characterized all micro‐GC components.
  2. We have completed the software (user interface) for automated operation.
  3. We have designed/fabricated integrated electronic boards to host all of the components.
  4. We have constructed 1x4 2‐dimensional portable GC.
  5. We developed a novel microfluidic photo‐ionization detector, which is 20‐30X faster and 200X more sensitive than the commercial PID.
  6. We have tested our automated GC instrument and were able to analyze 50 VOCs in 15 minutes (sampling + analysis).
  7. We have contacted environmental consulting companies and obtained air/water samples they collected from their customers.

Future Activities:

We will move to the Year 2 plan stated in the original proposal. We will (1) build a reference library and (2) implement the tests for evaluation of our devices in actual machine/paint workshops on campus.
