Objective:

The Center’s overall objectives will focus on applying principles of risk reduction, sustainability and new implementation approaches to innovative technologies that will reduce the risk associated with key contaminant groups and will increase the chance of adoption and sustainable use in small systems.

Progress Summary:

Among other things, the Design of Risk reducing, Innovative Small System Knowledge (DeRISK) Center has completed the following tasks:

  • Reviewed the basis of the current health risk model and collaborated with those who developed the model to identify opportunities to refine and further develop the model;
  • Created an integrated modeling tool to predict health risks from disinfectant by-product across multiple viable treatment technologies;
  • Applied ultra-violet technology to three pilot locations (HAWC-Kingston, NH, using a Berson-Aquionics MP system; Bethlehem, NH,housing a Trojan MP system and Star Island using a Xylem LPHO), which are operating and being routinely monitored for all agreed upon parameters;
  • Optimized coating of quartz fiber optics for use as fixed-film substrate for photocatalysis; and
  • Assessed the applicability of sunlight exposed ponds in pathogen inactivation and disinfection by product (DBP) reduction.

Future Activities:

The following activities were planned for the next reporting period: Test the optimized system at a field site to evaluate system sustainability and performance relative to MP UV technology; the experiments for biofilters involving the terrestrial source are completed, the microbial source experiments are half way completed and the wastewater effluent will be completed next; cost ranges for cartridge filtration are being developed for refinement and comprehensiveness of the cost model of the life cycle analysis.
