Health Risk Perspectives

This document updated the 1993 Assessment of Potential Health Risks of Gasoline Oxygenated with Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether and provided background information to help the reader understand issues surrounding the potential health risks related to oxygenated gasoline and reformulated gasoline containing oxygenates in relation to traditional, non-oxygenated gasoline. The document briefly explained how health risk is assessed, the effects of key pollutants related to the use of traditional gasoline (e.g., ozone, carbon monoxide, toxic air pollutants), and the potential health effects (both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic effects) of oxygenates, with the main focus of the report on MTBE.
