EPA is announcing the release of the Report on the Environmental Indicators: An Uncertainty and Scaling Pilot Study. This final report provides an analysis of uncertainty and scaling for seven of the Report on the Environment (ROE) indicators. The purpose of the ROE is to provide a reliable set of indicators for year-to-year comparisons and to inform Agency planning and decision-making, making the treatment of uncertainty critical.

On August 4, 2009, an external peer review panel workshop was hosted by an independent contractor on the Toxicological Review of Pentachlorophenol (External Review Draft). Completing this review, a final report of the comments from the workshop were collected and is now available.

EPA's Ecological Risk Assessment Support Center (ERASC) is announcing the release of the final report entitled, Evaluating Ecological Risk to Invertebrate Receptors from PAHs in Sediments at Hazardous Waste Sites. The report provides an approach for assessing risk to invertebrate receptors resulting from exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAHs) in contaminated sediments.

EPA published a notice in the Federal Register of Monday, August 31, 2009, announcing the extension of the public comment period for the "Integrated Science Assessment for Particulate Matter--Second External Review Draft"' (EPA/600/R-08/139B and EPA/600/R-08/139BA). The closing date of the extended comment period is a Federal holiday, October 12, 2009. Thus, the comment period is being extended to October 13, 2009. [ Federal Register October 5, 2009]

Cover of the Final IRIS Toxicological Review of Thallium and CompoundsEPA announces a new summary for Thallium (I), soluble salts , an updated summary for Thallium oxide, an updated summary for Thallium selenite, and an accompanying Toxicological Review (PDF) (136 pp, 964K) for all three, which has been added to the IRIS Web site and database. This assessment replaces the assessments for the following related substances: Thallium acetate, Thallium carbonate, Thallium chloride, Thallium nitrate, and Thallium (I) sulfate. In addition, Thallic oxide was renamed and replaced by Thallium oxide.

EPA is announcing the release of the report, Review of the University of Michigan Dioxin Exposure Study (September 2009). This report represents EPA’s evaluation and review of the University of Michigan Dioxin Exposure Study (UMDES). The UMDES was a field study of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds in the blood serum of populations living in and around Midland, Michigan, and was designed to understand the pattern of serum dioxin, furan and PCB levels among adults in the area and the factors that explain variation in these levels.

EPA is releasing this final report as supporting material for the Reevaluation of the Chemical Perchlorate as announced in an Aug 5, 2009 EPA Press Release. With this announcement comes a request for additional comments on alternative ways to analyze data related to the regulatory determination of perchlorate. A key focus of this re-evaluation is perchlorate exposure to sensitive life stages including infants and developing children, in addition to pregnant women and their developing fetuses. This report describes a causal assessment of the decline in the abundance of San Joaquin kit foxes on an oil field. The EPA CADDIS system was used to perform the causal inference, therefore this final report will also be referenced on the CADDIS site as a case study.

EPA is announcing a 45-day public comment period for the draft document, Nanomaterial Case Studies: Nanoscale Titanium Dioxide in Water Treatment and Topical Sunscreen (External Review Draft). This draft document presents two case studies of nanoscale titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) used (1) to remove arsenic from drinking water and (2) as an active ingredient in topical sunscreen. EPA and Argonne National Laboratories, through an inter-Agency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy, convened a workshop that identified and addressed issues related to the dose-response assessment of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD).

NCEA is announcing an opportunity for an internationally recognized risk assessment scientist to fill the position of Deputy Director, in their Cincinnati, OH Division. NCEA-Cincinnati conducts assessments to characterize the toxicity and related human health effects of high priority chemicals, develops methodologies and provides guidance on the assessment of the cumulative impact of chemical mixtures, and provides tools for ecological risk and causal assessment. The Deputy Division Director is a senior advisor on matters of science and science policy, provides recommendations, advice, and direction on risk assessment issues, and is responsible for the planning, organization, and coordination of activities within the division.

EPA's Ecological Risk Assessment Support Center (ERASC) has released the final report entitled, Estimation of Biota Sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF) from Paired Observations of Chemical Concentrations in Biota and Sediment. BSAF is a parameter describing bioaccumulation of sediment-associated organic compounds or metals into tissues of ecological receptors. The report provides information on methodologies to estimate BSAF for nonionic organic chemicals.

Cover of the Great Lakes Invasive Species Report EPA has released a final report entitled, "Predicting Future Introductions of Nonindigenous Species to the Great Lakes." This report predicts the spread of aquatic nonindigenous species into the Great Lakes to help resource managers focus monitoring activities on particular species at the most vulnerable U.S. Great Lakes ports. The report also demonstrates the use of a habitat suitability model and ballast water discharge data to predict invasion potential.
