XUser Guidance for the Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Publication Tool
A data exploration tool for viewing non-CO2 GHG projections and mitigation assessments as compiled in the EPA report, Global Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gas Emission Projections & Mitigation: 2015-2050.
This report provides a consistent and comprehensive set of (1) historical and projected estimates of emissions and (2) technical and economic mitigation estimates of non-CO2 GHGs from anthropogenic sources for 195 countries. The analysis provides information that can be used to understand national contributions of GHG emissions, historical progress on reductions, and mitigation opportunities.
Non-CO2 GHG Emission Estimates
Historical emission estimates were incorporated from country-reported data from 1990 through 2015, and emissions were projected through 2050.
Select the "Go" button to start defining a query and to navigate the data.
- World Total as default for data displays. The website defaults to World Total for year 2020 emissions based on IPCC 4th Assessment Report Global Warming Potentials (GWPs).
- World map uses color shading to indicate relative emissions by country for specified year. (See gradient color-bar scale below map.) Move cursor over individual countries to view emissions value in popup.
- Pie chart displays World Total emissions by primary sector for specified year.
- Move cursor over pie-chart slices to view sector emissions (value and percent) in popup.
- Select pie-chart slice to drill down to subsector pie chart for that sector.
- Data table for the specified year and sectors/subsectors can be generated onscreen by selecting the blue Generate Data Table button toward bottom of page.
- Toggle between the "filter-based" data table and the "complete data table" and Year.
- Export, copy, or print data tables. Search and sort data table.
- Change World Total default filtering Year using the drop-down filters at the top and then select the blue "Go" button.
- Doing so resets the map and pie chart to data for the selected year (and for the data table when the Generate Data Table button is selected again).
- Change sector/subsector filtering by making checkbox selections, which will immediately be reflected in the pie chart (and in the data table when the Generate Data Table button is selected again).
- Select any combination of sectors and subsectors.
- KEEP IN MIND: Whenever the "Go" button is selected to apply top-level filtering, the page and all sector/subsector selections reset (i.e., pie chart and data table) because the presentation dataset is refreshed.
- Return to default data display by selecting the Refresh button.
- Region-specific data filtering. Use the Region drop-down filter at the top and select the blue "Go" button to view data for that region.
- On map, move cursor over individual countries to view emissions value in popup.
- On pie chart, move cursor over pie-chart slices to view sector emissions (value and percent) in popup. Then select a pie-chart slice to drill down to subsector pie chart for that sector.
- For data table, select the blue Generate Data Table button to access data for countries in that region. Use the Search feature to view a table row for an individual country.
- Change sector/subsector filtering by making selections in the checkbox panel, which will immediately be reflected in the pie chart (and in the data table when the Generate Data Table button is selected again).
- Again on map, select a country in that region to change the pie-chart display to that country. Generate the data table for that country. Select the "Go" button to return pie chart to the region display. (Option also to select multiple countries in the region for pie–chart comparisons—see below.)
- Country-specific data filtering (pie chart). Options and variations:
- Country pie chart for sectors: Make drop-down selections at top and select the "Go" button, then select a country from the map, which will immediately be reflected in the pie chart.
- Move cursor over pie-chart slices to view sector emissions (value and percent) in popup.
- Select pie-chart slice to drill down to subsector pie chart for that sector.
- Country pie chart with sectors and subsectors: Make any combination of selections from the sector/subsector panel. Changes will immediately be reflected in the pie chart.
- Data table filtered for sector/subsectors: Select the Generate Data Table button to access data for the selected country with data for selected sectors/subsectors.
- Country pie chart for sectors: Make drop-down selections at top and select the "Go" button, then select a country from the map, which will immediately be reflected in the pie chart.
-
Country comparisons (pie charts). Options and variations:
- Multi-country pie chart for sectors: Make drop-down selections at top and select the "Go" button, then select up to four countries from the map (by holding down Shift key). Each country will immediately be reflected in the pie chart as a slice.
- Move cursor over pie-chart slices to view total emissions in popup for each country selected.
- Select a pie-chart slice to drill down to a multi-pie chart array at the sector level (i.e., a pie chart for each country).
- Again, select a pie-chart slice in any pie chart to drill down to an array of pie charts at the selected subsector level.
- Multi-country pie chart and sector/subsector selection: Make any combination of selections from the sector/subsector panel before or after selecting countries from the map. Changes will immediately be reflected in the pie-charts array. Toggle from multi-country pie charts to a single pie chart for all countries selected using the Back to Comparing Countries button.
- Data table filtered for sector/subsectors: Select the Generate Data Table button to access data for the selected countries with data for selected sectors/subsectors.
- Multi-country pie chart for sectors: Make drop-down selections at top and select the "Go" button, then select up to four countries from the map (by holding down Shift key). Each country will immediately be reflected in the pie chart as a slice.
Non-CO2 GHG Mitigation Estimates
Non-CO2 GHG mitigation estimates are expressed as marginal abatement cost (MAC) curves, which describe the abatement potential for a given source at various prices.
Select the "Go" button to start defining a query and to navigate the data.
- World Total as default for data displays. The website defaults to World Total for year 2020 emissions and emission reduction potentials based on IPCC 4th Assessment Report Global Warming Potentials (GWPs).
- World map uses color shading to indicate relative emission reduction potential by country for specified year. (See gradient color-bar scale below map.) Move cursor over individual countries to view emissions and mitigation potential values in popup.
- Bar chart displays World Total reduction potentials by primary sector for specified year. Data are split within two categories within the bar chart: "reductions achievable at cost less than $0/tCO2e" and "reductions achievable at costs greater than $0/tCO2e".
- Move cursor over bar chart to view emission reduction potentials in popup.
- Select bar to drill down to subsector from sector to subsectors or from subsector to abatement technologies.
- Data table for the specified year and sectors/subsectors can be generated onscreen by selecting the blue Generate Data Table button toward bottom of page.

About data visualizations for sectors and subsectors: When using the map to compare countries, you must drill down on the pie chart to display sector/subsector pie-chart slices and to re-enable the checkbox selection controls.
About country comparisons: Selecting another country after making initial sector/subsector checkbox selections will reset those selections.
You can choose up to 4 countries.
Data displays for non-CO2 marginal abatement cost curves (MACs) are not available in the current version of the non-CO2 web tool. This functionality will be added at a later date.
You can choose 1 country.
