Use of native materials (right!)

Cobbles and boulders used in this project are from the same stream system, giving the project a less artificial appearance than it would have if commercially-sold rock of a different type were used. Use of native rocks should be done selectively. Flooding in cobble-filled stream corridors often leaves large rock piles that may be suitable sources of cobbles and boulders, rather than digging in inappropriate locations or taking rocks from high quality in-stream habitats. When this job is finished, piling some of the larger boulders in a sloped face in front of the gabion baskets will help hide the artificial structures as well as help stabilize them.
