EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of Hydrogen Cyanide and Cyanide Salts in the September 23, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their revisions. The FR also announced a public listening session that was held on October 27, 2009. The external peer review meeting will be held on December 17, 2009 as announced in the November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice announcement.

EPA is conducting a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of hydrogen cyanide and cyanide salts that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of Hydrogen Cyanide and Cyanide Salts provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to hydrogen cyanide and cyanide salts. Cyanide compounds are used in a number of industrial processes including mining, electroplating, metallurgy, chemical manufacturing, and photography because these compounds can form stable complexes with a range of metals. Hydrogen cyanide is also a component of tobacco smoke, vehicle exhaust, and is produced by the burning of some plastics. Cyanide salts, such as potassium and sodium cyanide, are also used as rodenticides.

Jun 2004The IRIS reassessment of hydrogen cyanide was initiated in 2004.
Sep 2009EPA released an external review draft of the assessment for public review and comment.
Oct 2009EPA announced a public listening session that was held on October 27, 2009 in a September 23, 2009 Federal Register Notice.
Nov 2009EPA announces the details of an external peer review workshop to be held on December 14, 2009 in a November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice.

Next Steps

Following the External Peer Review, the final assessment will be published on the IRIS database.
