[1/24/08] EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of Chlordecone (Kepone) and notice of the External Peer Review Panel Meeting in the January 24, 2008 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within the external review period (next 60 days) will be provided to peer reviewers prior to the External Peer Review Panel Meeting for their consideration. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their future revisions.

EPA conducted a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of chlordecone that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of chlordecone provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to subchronic and chronic exposure to chlordecone. Chlordecone is a chlorinated pesticide which before the cancelation of its production and use in the late 1970s was used primarily as an insecticide to control slugs, snails and fire ants. Chlordecone has been found at hazardous waste sites and is also a degradation product of the pesticide Mirex in the environment. Chlordecone was nominated for evaluation by the Superfund Technical Support Center.

This assessment contains the derivation of an oral reference dose for chronic exposure and a qualitative evaluation of suggestive carcinogenic potential.

History/Chronology

2004The chlordecone IRIS assessment was initiated in 2004. Chlordecone was nominated for assessment by the Superfund Technical Support Center. An assessment for chlordecone is not currently on IRIS.
Jan 2008EPA releases an External Review Draft of the report.
Sep 2009EPA released the Final toxicological review (PDF) (183 pp, 1.1M) and accompanying Summary for Chlordecone (Kepone) to the IRIS Database.

Next Steps

Following External Peer Review, the final assessment is scheduled to be posted to the IRIS database.
