Photo showing a muddy forest road: considering local and seasonal climate during planning can minimize the chance of weather-related problems during timber harvest.

1. Pre-harvest Planning BMPs (continued)

Natural drainage channels, threatened and endangered species habitat, topography, and soil types should be major considerations in determining the:

  • boundaries of timber harvest activities;
  • location and design of roads and landings;
  • selection of harvesting method; and
  • reforestation techniques.

Construction and harvest operations should be timed to take advantage of seasonal conditions. The driest months are generally the best times for road construction to avoid runoff and drainage problems. Constructions during heavy rains, freeze/thaw conditions increases the potential for runoff and erosion.
