Human Health and Toxic Cyanobacteria – What do we know?Elizabeth D. HilbornWarm, eutrophic surface water systems support the development of toxic cyanobacteria blooms in North Carolina and worldwide. These conditions are increasing with expanding human populations and climate change. We present the evidence for adverse human health effects associated with exposure to cyanobacteria and their toxins in drinking water, recreational water and via medical procedures. We will discuss the range of effects reported to be associated with exposure, and the current state of the epidemiology of toxic cyanobacteria. This is a description of a proposed presentation and does not necessarily reflect EPA policy.
