Description:

Hadwaco US, Inc., manufactures a commercial ready mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) evaporator for use in the metal finishing industry. The evaporator utilizes proven MVR and falling film principles, with the key innovation being the construction material of the heat transfer surface elements; corrosion-resistant and elastic polymers. The specific cost of the heat transfer surface is low, allowing for the use of large surface areas that results in a very low energy use per unit of condensate produced.

The Hadwaco MVR evaporator was tested on a sulfuric acid pickling operation at a copper rod manufacturing facility. The test evaluated the evaporator's ability to concentrate an acidic copper solution sufficiently to reclaim the copper, recycle the sulfuric acid back to the pickling bath, and recycle purified water back to the rinsewater tank. Parameters evaluated were copper, lead, sulfate acidity, total dissolved solida, and total suspended solids. All analytical results for key parameters are shown in the verification report and statement.

The test results demonstrate that the Hadwaco evaporator produced a concentrate that allowed the manufacturing facility to effectively electrowinn metallic copper for reclaiming. It was projected from test data that on an annual basis 99,700 L of recovered sulfuric acid could be reused in the process. It was also projected that the evaporator in combination with electrowinning could prevent approximately 201,455 kg/year of an acidic copper solution from being disposed of as hazardous waste. Also, it was projected that the use of 112,900,000 L of water per year is avoided by using the evaporator condensate as makeup water for the process.
