APPLICATION OF JET REMPI AND LIBS TO AIR TOXIC MONITORING

Citation:

Gullett*, B K. APPLICATION OF JET REMPI AND LIBS TO AIR TOXIC MONITORING. Presented at Optical Society of America: Laser Applications to Chemical and Environmental Analysis, Annapolis, MD, February 09 - 11, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The paper discusses three advanced, laser-based monitoring techniques that the EPA is assisting in developing for real time measurement of toxic aerosol compounds. One of the three techniques is jet resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (Jet REMPI) coupled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) to selectively measure the specific congeners of chlorinated dioxins and furans that are toxic. The second technique, single photon ionization (SPI) coupled with TOFMS, is intended to be used in a compact, rugged, field portable system for detection of toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents. The third technique, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), can characterize aerosols, liquids, gases, and solids in real time. LIBS has also shown promise for detecting biological agents.
