DIOXIN EMISSIONS FROM OPEN AND UNCONTROLLED BURNING OF BIOMASS AND WASTE

Citation:

Gullett*, B K. DIOXIN EMISSIONS FROM OPEN AND UNCONTROLLED BURNING OF BIOMASS AND WASTE. Presented at Dioxines Polluants Organiques Persistants, hosted by ADEME, Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maitrise de l'Energie, Paris, FRANCE, March 10, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenszofurans (PCDD/PCDF) from uncontrolled burring of biomass and waste are responsible for a significant, if not major, portion of the global releases. Limited testing for emissions, coupled with activity factors, shows that some uncontrolled burning sources may be contributing emissions in excess of industrialized sources even in industrialized countries. Additional testing and activity factor derivation on these sources will be necessary for countries to understand the implication of their uncontrolled buring sources on their national inventories and on meeting the needs of international accords for reduction of persistent organic pollutants.
