NSF International, AND HydroQual, Inc. ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION: JOINT (NSF-EPA) VERIFICATION STATEMENT AND REPORT FOR THE UV DISINFECTION OF SECONDARY EFFLUENTS, SUNTEC, INC. MODEL LPX200 DISINFECTION SYSTEM - 03/09/WQPC-SWP. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 600/R-03/132.

Description:

Verification testing of the SUNTEC LPX200 UV Disinfection System to develop the UV delivered dose flow relationship was conducted at the Parsippany-Troy Hills wastewater treatment plant test site in Parsippany, New Jersey. Two lamp modules were mounted parallel in a 6.5-meter long stainless channel. Each lamp module consisted of two columns of five lamps each, providing a total of twenty lamps in a five by four matrix, with an effective disinfection zone approximately 0.36 meters wide by 1.62 meters long. The verification test included evaluation of disinfection for secondary effluent at 55 and 65 percent transmittance, using MS2 bacteriophage as the test organism. Five flow rates were tested for each transmittance, with each flow rate tested in quadruplicate. The delivered dose was calculated using the dose-response calibration curve developed from thirteen dose-response tests using the collimated beam procedure. The relationship between delivered dose and flow rate was calculated for each transmittance based on the lower 75 percent confidence interval, and presented in graphical and equation format. Headloss through the lamp modules was measured and a dye tracer test was performed to document the hydraulic profile of the system. Power consumption was determined at 100 percent power. Data collected for scaling the system to larger flow applications was presented in the final report.
