Description:
This manuscript examines the relationship between cholinesterase inhibition and behavioral effects produced by two pesticides, fenamiphos and profenophos. Both pesticides greatly inhibit blood cholinesterase but the brain is relatively spared up to lethal doses. Despite the similar cholinesterase profiles, fenamiphos but not profenophos produces a spectrum of behavioral changes. Thus, the neurobehavioral effects of fenamiphos could not be explained based on brain ChE inhibition alone. Despite the sparing of brain ChE, some behavioral effects of fenamiphos were centrally mediated, and there was little regional specificity of ChE inhibition that could account for the behavioral changes observed.
