A MANAGEMENT SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR GREAT LAKES COASTAL WETLANDS
Citation:
Impact/Purpose:
To design an implementable monitoring plan, with scientifically valid indicators, for scientists, decision-makers and the public to assess the condition of coastal wetlands in the international Great Lakes basin.
Description:
The Great Lakes National Program Office in conjunction with the Great Lakes Commission and other researchers is leading a large scale collaborative effort that will yield, in unprecedented detail, a management support system for Great Lakes coastal wetlands. This entails the development and validation of indicators of wetland condition, the design of a long-term monitoring program; and the development and population of a broadly accessible binational database. A multiagency, multidisciplinary binational consortium has been formed to accomplish this task, which brings together the unparalleled experience, expertise and resources of federal, state and provincial governments; regional organizations; academia; and non-governmental organizations. Approximately two dozen agencies, organizations and institutions have been brought into the Consortium as Project Management Team members. Currently, the suite of indicators and the classification system have been drafted and Peer Reviewed through the State of the Lake Ecosystem Conference Peer Review (January 2004; see separate SOLEC peer review entry for details). Also, the indicators were presented for peer review in October 2004 at the SOLEC conference in Toronto. The Peer Reviewed classification scheme and indicators are available at the web site below.
