REVIEW OF MULTI-AGENCY RADIATION SURVEY & SITE INVESTIGATION MANUAL (MARSSIM) SUPPLEMENT: MULTI-AGENCY RADIATION SURVEY AND ASSESSMENT OF MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT (MARSAME). 2001.

Impact/Purpose:

The objective of the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) is to provide a multi-agency approach for planning, performing and assessing disposition surveys of materials and equipment, while at the same time encouraging an effective use of resources. The MARSAME Supplement is being prepared by an interagency group including EPA, DOD, DOE and NRC. MARSSIM (including supplemental materials) is being used by the four Federal Agencies above, States and Territories, Superfund PRPs, radioactive material facilities/licensees, and emergency response managers.

Description:

Radioactive materials have been produced, processed, used, and transported amongst thousands of sites throughout the United States. Owners and operators of these sites would like to determine if materials or equipment on these sites are contaminated with radioactive materials, in order to determine whether or not those materials and equipment may be safely released from or accepted into their control. The Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Assessment Manual (MARSSIM) provides detailed guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental and facility radiological surveys conducted to demonstrate compliance with a risk- or dose-based criterion. MARSAME is a supplement to MARSSIM providing information on planning, conducting, evaluating and documenting radiological dispersion surveys for the assessment of materials and equipment. MARSAME is a multi-agency consensus document that was developed collaboratively by four Federal agencies having authority and control over radioactive materials: Department of Defense (DOE), Department of Energy (DOE), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and EPA.
