CONSULTATION/DEVELOPMENT OF MULTI-AGENCY RADIATION SURVEY & SITE INVESTIGATION MANUAL (MARSSIM) SUPPLEMENT: MULTI-AGENCY RADIATION SURVEY AND ASSESSMENT OF MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT (MARSAME)

Impact/Purpose:

The objective of the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) Supplement is to provide detailed guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating materials and equipment surveys conducted to demonstrate compliance with pre-determined release criterion. The MARSAME Supplement is being prepared by an interagency group including EPA, DOD, DOE, NRC, and the State of Florida. MARSSIM (including supplemental materials) is used by the four Federal Agencies above, States and Territories, Superfund PRPs, radioactive material facilities/licensees, and emergency response managers

Description:

Radioactive materials have been produced, processed, used, and stored at thousands of sites throughout the United States. Owners and operators of these sites would like to determine if materials or equipment used on these sites are contaminated with radioactive materials, in order to determine whether or not those materials and equipment may be released safely from their control. The Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Assessment Manual (MARSSIM) provides detailed guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental and facility radiological surveys conducted to demonstrate compliance with a dose-based criterion. Building upon the MARSSIM framework, the Multi-Agency Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) Supplement will be developed to provide detailed guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating materials and equipment surveys conducted to demonstrate compliance with pre-determined release criterion. The MARSAME guidance focuses on the demonstration of compliance during the final release of the material following scoping, characterization, and necessary remedial actions. This activity will result in a product - the draft MARSAME - that will be peer reviewed (record 73942).
