TRIBAL LEADERS ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMIT

Impact/Purpose:

This is an annual conference focused on Region 10 Tribal concerns and issues relating to environmental management. The purpose of the conference is to provide a venue for dialogue among Region 10 Tribes, and also between Region 10 upper level management and Tribal leaders. The agenda changes every year and addresses new or emerging issues of concern.

Description:

This annual conference includes general and breakout sessions relating to science or environmental management in such areas as solid waste, community planning, environmental education, contaminants, capacity building and more. The October 2000 Tribal Summit was held in Anchorage, Alaska. The agenda included the scientific topics of contaminants in traditional Native foods, marine vessels' discharges into water, POPs and indoor air quality. There was a half-day session entitled, "Merging Traditional Knowledge with Modern Science". The Tribal Summit is held every Fall, and the meeting location rotates within Region 10.
