TRANSGENIC MOUSE MODELS AND PARTICULATE MATTER (PM)

Impact/Purpose:

Specifically, this work will support efforts to (1) Identify mechanisms of toxicity for PM constituents/sources and (2) Describe mechanism by which transition metals are transported into lung cells.

Description:

The hypothesis to be tested is that metal catalyzed oxidative stress can contribute to the biological effects of particulate matter. We acquired several transgenic mouse strains to test this hypothesis. Breeding of the mice was accomplished by Duke University. Particles employed included emission source and ambient air particles. Our goals are to identify mechanisms of toxicity for PM constituents/sources and to describe the mechanism(s) by which transition metals are transported into lung cells. While the actual exposures and studies have been completed, analysis of the data will follow.
