Impact/Purpose:

The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) will use the products of this grant to provide a data-rich source of information that may assist in the identification and prioritization of conservation projects. This project will complement the Strategic Plan for the Protection of Wetlands and Water Resource Protection in Southwest Colorado proposal by providing the essential data on wetland types, rarity, and functions for the Southwestern Wetlands Focus Area Committee's strategic and action plans.

Description:

The Products of this study will be to: 1) identify high-quality examples, and the corresponding natural heritage value, of all types of wetland/riparian areas in San Juan County (using CNHP's Comprehensive Statewide Wetland Classification); 2) coordinate efforts with the proposed San Juan County Biological Inventory (submitted to GOCO for funding); 3) evaluate the functions associated with each wetland type, 4) assess the restoration potential of each wetland type, and 5) identify potential reference wetlands for hydrogeomorphic (HGM) program.
