Description:

The acid-catalyzed condensation reaction of a molecule of 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazine (DNPH) with a carbonyl compound is a well known reaction for characterizing aldehydes and ketones. The DNPH derivatives are used to identify qualitatively the parent carbonyl compound by melting point determination. Gram quantities of the derivatives are easily prepared by well-established procedures.
