Structure-selective measurement techniques are needed for the assessment of the toxic loading of incinerator gases. This review article shows that wavelength-resolved, resonance-enhanced, multiphoton- ionization (REMPY) mass spectrometry can be used to this end. In this case, however, the knowledge of suitable wavelengths for the ionization of the target molecules is required. For this purpose, we have compiled a spectroscopic data list for relevant target compounds, supplemented it by our own measurements of reference spectra, and explained its use.

Analogous data for polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (dioxins) and dibenzofurans (furans) are scarce and constitute a gap in our spectra list. For these compounds, spectra obtained by other authors are presented. The issue of practical application is briefly addressed, and it is pointed out that wavelength selectivity provides a substantial further piece of information beyond conventional mass selectivity. This point is underscored in the Discussion section and leads to the result that determination of dioxin and furan toxic equivalency (TEQ) requires wavelength selectivity.
