CONCERNS WITH THE BENEFICIAL REUSE IN AGRICULTURE OF RESIDUALS FROM MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS

Citation:

Smith* Jr., J E. CONCERNS WITH THE BENEFICIAL REUSE IN AGRICULTURE OF RESIDUALS FROM MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS. Presented at Washington University's Environmental Seminar Series, Saint Louis, MO, 1/24/2003.

Description:

The pathogenic organisms that may be present in such residuals, processes commonly employed for controlling them; these processes' effectiveness and how extensively they are used; and issues and concerns with beneficial reuse will be discussed. Processes presently being researched will also be noted together with the USEPA's methodology for determining the effectiveness of a newly developed process. In June 2001 an International Meeting was held to assess the issues associated with occurrence, detection, and destruction of infectious disease agents in manure and biosolids. Findings of that meeting will be given along with those of a July 2002 National Research Council Report, "Biosolids Applied to Land: Advancing Standards and Practices." EPA had asked the NRC to conduct an independent evaluation of the technical methods and approaches used to establish the chemical and pathogen standards for biosolids, focusing specifically on human health protection and not ecological or agricultural issues. Lastly, concerns with frequently employed methods for achieving vector attraction reduction will be considered.
