Description:

This presentation reviews the pathogenic microorganisms that may be found in municipal sewage sludge and the commonly employed Class A and B processes for controlling pathogens. It notes how extensively they are used and discusses issues and concerns with their application. Preliminary findings of a June 2001 International Workshop on Emerging Infectious Disease Agents and Issues Associated with Animal Manures, Biosolids and Other Similar By-Products are given. The presentation looks at the reasons for wanting to use a Class A process including the public's concerns and perceptions. Disinfection processes presently being researched are also noted together with EPA's methodology for determining equivalency. Lastly, issues and concerns with frequently employed methods for achieving vector attraction reduction are considered.
