VALIDATION OF AN AVIAN TWO-GENERATION REPRODUCTION TEST: U.S. INITIATIVES

Citation:

Touart, L. AND R S. Bennett. VALIDATION OF AN AVIAN TWO-GENERATION REPRODUCTION TEST: U.S. INITIATIVES. Presented at 12th Annual SETAC Meeting Europe, Vienna, Austria, May 12-16, 2001.

Description:

Documented effects to fish and wildlife populations, coupled with evidence from human poisonings, epidemiology, and experimental toxicology led to the formation of the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP) within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EDSP main objectives are to validate and implement the screening and testing recommendations provided by EDSTAC for screening possible endocrine disruption activity of chemicals. A scientific advisory panel (EDMVS) guides the validation activities of the EDSP and EDSP coordinates these activities with ICCVAM and OECD validation principles. An avian two-generation test is one of the recommended tier 2 tests currently undergoing pre-validation. Pre-validation includes method development, performance demonstration, and protocol optimization. Prevalidation issues identified by an OECD avian reproduction expert group are being addressed in EDSP directed work tasks. The status of EDSP activities in the prevalidation steps to date and workplan for ultimate validation and regulatory acceptance will be discussed.
