Description:

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is undertaking a long-term program to conduct field evaluations of landfill bioreactors. The near-term effort is focused on the development of appropriate monitoring strategies to ensure adequate control of the landfill bioreactors and to assist the States and owner/operators with the oversight and operation of these facilities. The longer term effort of this program is to evaluate the effectiveness of various landfill bioreactor designs.

With the increasing use of landfill bioreactors, there is an increasing need for the Federal, State, private and academic sectors to have better integration of the work that is being conducted in evaluating landfill bioreactors. The USEPA, through cooperative research with the private sector, is developing monitoring strrategies for landfill bioreactors. For the various sectors conducting research and/or employing bioreactors, it is critical that the scientific community collects comparable monitoring date. This will advance our collective understanding of the operation and effectiveness of landfill bioreactors to provide and adequate database and to ultimately, if warranted, support it's broader application. The EPA's exisitng monitoring strategy will be discussed.
