Martin*, J F. EPA'S WASTE MANAGEMENT AND SOIL TREATMENT RESEARCH. Presented at Westchester Kiwanis, Westchester, OH, 8/16/2001.

Description:

The mission of the EPA is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which life depends. In order to accomplish this mission, the Agency is organized into a series of regional and program offices. The ORD supports the various components of the Agency by conducting leading-edge research and fostering the sound use of science and technology in fulfilling EPA's mission. The Remediation and Containment Branch of NRMRL provides research support in the areas of Site Remediation (Superfund), Contaminant Containment, and Waste Management. Individual projects are undertaken at the laboratory bench and in the field. Specific work includs in situ treatment of soils, metal immobilization, phytoremediation, assessment of alternative cover systems, landfill bioreactors, leach testing, and stabilization of hard-to-treat-wastes. Results of the research program will support EPA's Program Offices as well as State and local regulatory agencies and individual site owners and clean-up contractors.
