Description:

Carbon dioxide (CO2), a main contributor to global climate change, also adds carbon to forests. In contrast, tropospheric ozone (O3) can reduce carbon uptake and increase carbon loss by forests. Thus, the net balance of carbon uptake and loss for forests can be affected by concurrent exposures to CO2 and O3 in ways not predicted exposures to the individual gases. This study uses special outdoor, sunlit, chambers to determine effects of both CO2 and O3 on ponderosa pine seedlings and their associated litter and soil. During the 2000 growing season, the ponderosa pine system was exposed to ambient or ambient + ~300 ppm elevated CO2, plus an elevated O3 level (seasonal SUM 06 ~ 26.1 ppm hours-1) or a low level of background O3 (SUM 06 = 0.1 ppm hours-1). We report seasonal patterns in CO2 flux into needles and CO2 flux the litter and soil, and the impacts of elevated CO2 and O3 on those fluxes.
