Description:

Development of PBTK models for fish has been impededd by a lack of data on the branchial elimination of hydrophobic compounds. The hypothesis is that branchial efflux of high log Kow compounds proceeds to an equilibrium between the afferent blood and expired water. Branchial efflux of high log Kow chemicals is difficult to measure because of extremely low chemical concentrations in the expired water. Using transected rainbow trout in respiration-metabolism chambers and adsorption chromatography, chemicals were extracted from large volumes (20 to 100 L) of expired water. Analysis of the column extracts were performed by high-resolution GC/MS using isotope dilution.
