Rice*, E W., M. Allen, AND J. Clancy. PATHOGEN MONITORING - OLD BAGGAGE FROM THE LAST MILLENIUM. Presented at 9th National Conf on Drinking Water by Canadian Water and Wastewater Association, Regina, SK, Canada, May 16-18, 2000.
Description:
This presentation discusses the fallacy of relying upon pathogen monitoring techniques to protect public health. Emphasis will be placed on protozoan monitoring methods and the inherent difficulties associated with these procedures. Several case studies will be presented. It will gbe noted that the low recovery rates of many of these methods p[rovides a false sense of security when a negative test result is reported. Treatment optimization and methods for determining treatment efficiency will be proposed as a more reliable approach for protecting potable water supplies from microbial contamination.
