TARGET ORGAN TOXICITY IN MARINE AND FRESHWATER TELEOSTS: VOLUME 2 - SYSTEMS

Description:

In any given aquatic ecosystem, fish serve a multitude of critical functions and so, are typically included in the risk assessment of various chemicals in waterways. However, uncertainties in toxicity evaluation can arise since these assessments are usually based solely on acute lethality. Knowing the target organ and understanding the mechanisms of toxicity will reduce uncertainty. All the chapters are written by researchers who are internationally recognized for their work in mechanistic aspects of aquatic toxicology. Each chapter focuses on a specific target organ and describes how various agents disrupt the normal physiological processes. This volume provides coverage of toxic effects in the central nervous, immune, eurobehavioural and reproductive systems as well as describing general mechanisms of toxicity. The companion first volume, Organs, is devoted to specific organs with coverage of the gill, kidney, skin, liver and gut.
